Neill Blomkamp Still Intends to Make 'District 1. Director Neill Blomkamp’s third sci- fi feature film, Chappie, has unfortunately gone the same way was as Elysium as far as most critics are concerned. Set in the near- future where the Johannesburg police force has been mechanized, Chappie is about a programmer who hijacks an old police robot and gives it the capacity to learn, feel and create. District 9, Blomkamp’s first feature and his breakout success, was set in an alternate version of Blomkamp’s home town of Johannesburg, where the arrival of a small population of aliens several decades previously has led to a new apartheid where the “Prawns” are segregated into a broken- down slum called District 9. Sharlto Copley played Wikus, a government official who finds himself transforming into one of the aliens after being infected by their technology. The film concluded with the aliens being moved along to a new area called District 1. Discussion of a follow- up began almost as soon as District 9 was released, with Blomkamp saying that he’d be interested in making a sequel and later revealing that he’d written a “really f***ing cool” treatment for it. With Blomkamp’s next film set to be a sequel to Aliens it looks like District 1. In a new interview with IGN the director explained that he considers District 9, Elysium and Chappie to be a kind of spiritual trilogy, which is why he wants to take a break from the aesthetic that he developed in those films.“I feel like Chappie is the end of three films that have a similar stylistic approach to them. The original concept, Blomkamp says, was for a standalone film.“It was a completely self- contained story about the Nazi becoming the Holocaust victim, basically. It was the oppressor becoming the oppressed. And when it’s based on a character like that, it ends on that character. The inadvertent world creation that came with it, which to me is my perfect kind of thing that I love – having a bunch of weird alien weapons in the back of a shack that you can discover – that’s just ripe for creative insanity, so it took a few years to process what that could be.“I think that the story that I have now is what I would want to see as a fan of the first film, I think. I know I would want to see it – I assume other people would. It’s good man!”The story that Blomkamp has in mind for District 1. Still, if George Miller can make another Mad Max sequel thirty years after the release of Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome then it’s far too early to start writing of the possibility of District 1. In the eight years since District 9 hit theaters and introduced the world to the talents of actor Sharlto Copley as Wikus and writer-director Neill Blomkamp, fans. District 9 - Wikipedia. Twenty- eight years later, in 2. District 9, the government hires private military company Multinational United (MNU) to relocate the aliens to a new internment camp. Piet Smit (Louis Minnaar), an MNU executive, appoints his son in law, Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley), a nebbish Afrikanerbureaucrat, to lead the relocation. Assisted by armed MNU personnel, the relocation uses bribes of cat food, which has an addictive quality for the aliens, as well as force, sometimes even deadly. As the relocation progresses, three aliens — Christopher Johnson (Jason Cope), his son, and a friend — are seen scavenging pieces of alien technology, from which they distill a fluid which they collect in a small canister, hoping to use it as fuel to return home. During an inspection, Wikus discovers and confiscates the canister from the Christopher's friend's shack, but accidentally sprays some of the fluid onto his own face, which causes him to have a momentary seizure. Under the fluid's influence, Wikus' body deteriorates, being replaced with alien tissue starting with his left arm, which he injured after being exposed to the fluid. After the mutation is revealed at a local hospital, Wikus is detained and transported to MNU headquarters for brutal experimentation, where it is discovered that Wikus' now- chimeric DNA grants him the ability to use his transformed arm to wield alien weapons, which are biologically restricted to the aliens. Seeing him as a means to enable the use of alien weapons, Smit and his scientists decide to vivisect Wikus, but he overpowers them and escapes the facility. Smit orders Koobus Venter (David James), a sadistic mercenary soldier employed by MNU, and his men to hunt Wikus down, while a smear story is broadcast, claiming that Wikus is a wanted fugitive who has contracted an STD from sex with prawns. The story speads, even reaching Wikus' wife, Tania (Vanessa Haywood). Wikus finds refuge in District 9 and stumbles into Christopher's shack, where he learns that Christopher is hiding the lost command module of their spacecraft underground, and comes to understand from Christopher that the canister's fluid would be able to reactivate the command module and the dormant mothership, where Christopher claims he can reverse Wikus' mutation. To recover the canister from MNU headquarters, Wikus obtains alien weapons from superstitious Nigerian arms dealer Obesandjo (Eugene Khumbanyiwa) and his gang, which he and Christopher use to assault the headquarters, retrieve the canister, and flee to District 9 with MNU forces in pursuit. Appalled by the illegal experiments on his fellow aliens at MNU headquarters, Christopher decides to return to his home planet for help, and explains that he cannot undo Wikus' mutation until he returns, which will be at least three years. Enraged by this revelation, Wikus knocks Christopher out and attempts to fly the command module to the mothership, but is almost immediately shot down by Venter and his men. They capture Wikus and Christopher, but Obesandjo's gang attacks the convoy and seize Wikus, acting on Obesandjo's belief that eating Wikus' transformed arm will enable him to use alien weaponry. Obesandjo's base is then attacked by MNU forces. Read the Triple 9 movie synopsis, view the movie trailer, get cast and crew information, see movie photos, and more on Movies.com. The command module with Christopher and his son is lifted into the mothership, which they use to leave Earth, and Johannesburg's residents celebrate the alien ship's departure. A series of interviews and news broadcasts are shown speculating about Wikus' whereabouts and the potential return of Christopher and the spacecraft, and what it may entail. MNU's illegal experiments are exposed by Wikus' friend and assistant Fundiswa (Mandla Gaduka), and District 9 is demolished; all the aliens are subsequently moved to the larger District 1.
